There are a lot of things you can’t control about getting into med school, but there are some things you can control:

  1. How early you start

  2. What you prioritize

  3. Being consistent

If you are planning to apply this summer, your priorities should be your personal statement, LORs, and activities section in that order. Just start a Google Doc for each of these things and jot down some things that come to mind. You should definitely keep polishing every couple of days to make sure it improves over time, and start asking for feedback.

For the personal statement, make sure you visualize a thread that runs through the whole essay. For the activities, clarify how the activity impacted you and how you impacted it. For the LORs, ask ASAP.

There’s one priority we didn’t talk about. If you’re planning to apply this cycle and you haven’t taken it yet, that trumps everything else. I would start ASAP, as you have much less time than you think, but it is very doable with a strong plan that helps you avoid wasting time.
